Rehabilitation of Six Elevated Stations on
the White Plains Road IRT Line
NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT
White Plains Road Station
HDR|Daniel Frankfurt, as the Engineering partners in a joint venture with Urbahn Associates, Architects, designed the comprehensive rehabilitation and system upgrade for six elevated stations on the White Plains Road IRT #2 Line in the Bronx. These stations were among the earliest elevated stations constructed by NYCT and contain historic elements.
The project rebuilt all control areas, added new stairs and escalators, expanded program areas, and provided for rehabilitation and retrofit to bring the stations to a state of good repair. As an innovation to expedite construction, the control houses were designed for factory-built modular construction in which the 6 to 8 modules were field erected to comprise the entire new buildings. This construction approach expedited the project and minimized down time for each station. The engineering tasks accomplished by HDR|Daniel Frankfurt consisted of an in-depth inspection of the elevated structure, structural analysis, design of retrofit / rehabilitation for steel and concrete platform elements, new foundations and structure for expansions, and the development of modular construction designs and constructability.
